Tromso!

Tromso Tourist Shop

I recently visited Tromso in the northern part of Norway. They have been having rare weather lately, and it was windy and rainy, which kept the temperatures around 0 (rather than -12C), but also almost everything was shut, like husky sledding and boat tours.

The strange weather is also impacting the reindeer farmers, a practice overseen for centuries by the native Sámi people of Norway.

The unusual rain causes the ground to freeze over when it is feeding season for the reindeer. They can't eat the fresh growth, and are in dire need of caretaking. We visited a reindeer farm to help feed the reindeer with pellet food, as they are unable to graze for themselves.

It is in these strange corners of the world you really feel the impact of climate change, the impact on these peoples ways of lives in immense and unexplainable. How could they people, who have lived in a dark corner of the world for so long, know what is really causing their suffering?

The effects will flow on from here, only the first signs that we should pay heed are found in the little voices of the Sámi.
